"There's a Spy in My Beer," Scenes A, B, and C

On February 28, 1979, over two months before "There's a Spy in My Beer" aired, the Revised Shooting Script came in.  As always, there will be changes, but this time not that much right away.

We start in a brand-new set, the "experimental vat room (Shotz Brewery) - day."  Laverne was supposed to scream when Ludwig jumps out the window.  And she was also supposed to run down the stairs and out the door, yelling, "Shirl, guards, doctor, Poppi [sic]."  Other than that, Scene A made it in intact.

The next scene is in the breakroom, also day.  They left out Squiggy suspecting "Rooskie dogs" or "Pinko puppies."  (What is it with the boys suspecting dogs of crimes?)  And, again, the scene mostly aired as written.

So we move on to the girls' apartment, now night.  For some reason, Laverne's temperature was 123 in the script rather than 126, in Frank's story about her faking illness to get out of school.  For those keeping track of spelling, it's "Uncle Fungi" here.

They skipped Laverne's line, "I knew it.  Crazy runs in our family.  They're gonna put me in the nut house.  They're gonna make me weave baskets the rest of my life."  And then she "blubbers."

They left out the following finger-paintings: butterfly for Edna, rainbow for Shirley, and "mess" for Carmine.  This was omitted:

FRANK
...Get some rest, Muffin.

THEY [Frank, Edna, Carmine] START TO LEAVE.

SHIRLEY
Next time we'll play with clay.

ALL
Clay!

LAVERNE
I probably won't get any clay, either.

THEY'RE OUT.  SHIRLEY CLOSES THE DOOR.

SHIRLEY
Oh stop it....

For some reason, in the script Shirley tells Laverne how to make orange rather than purple.

I'm having a hard time thinking of an Act One with so few changes.  And of the things that were taken out, only Squiggy's suspicion of spy dogs is at all memorable.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
