"Squiggy in Love," Scenes E, H, and J

We're at the "girls' apartment - a few minutes later":

SHIRLEY IS ALONE IN THE APARTMENT.  SHE IS UNSCREWING LIGHT BULB TO REPLACE ONE IN FIREPLACE.

SHIRLEY
I'll let Carmine do it.

That little bit was left out, but other than some very minor phrasing and blocking, this scene made it in intact.

Then we go back to the "break room - day."  In the script, Shirley says that she and Carmine are "hotter than a pepper sprout," and they sat on a blanket, rather than just the ground near the pond.  We lost Laverne asking, after Shirley said that she and Carmine listened to the crickets all night, "And he still respected you in the morning?"

Onscreen, Lenny says he doesn't share the good times with Squiggy anymore, but in the script he says, "We don't share fun times no more.  I can't talk to him.  Nobody can talk to him," and then Shirley says, "Give him a chance."  And a bit later this was dropped after Laverne is incensed at Vivian calling Squiggy "a little twerp":

SHIRLEY
Wait for Squiggy.  He'll take care of her.

LAVERNE
She's bigger than him, Shirl.  Let me deck her.

LENNY
You hold her, I'll try rubbing her to death.

Squiggy saying that Vivian would "cry her hair out" was added.  We lost the last two-thirds of a page of Scene H, although a bit of it would turn up as a blooper:

SQUIGGY
...C'mon, Len, isn't this steam reaming day?

LENNY
You're ten feet tall today, Squig.  It's great to see you treat women like dirt again.

SQUIGGY
It's great to treat them that way.

THEY EXIT.

SHIRLEY
Well, it's you and me.

LAVERNE
You know, I've never actually seen them steam ream a fertilizer plant before.

SHIRLEY
I'll call Carmine and you call Ted.  We'll double.

THEY EXIT.

And so ends Act Two.  The tag is set at the "girls' apartment - a few days later."  It was faithfully adapted, although in the written version Laverne is "slightly charred," but the special effects people added some nice smoke drifting off her.

Thoughts:
  • A little of Shirley counseling that they let Squiggy deal with Vivian made it to air, but Lenny restrains Laverne rather than, um, suggesting he rub Vivian to death.
  • Lander couldn't get through the "steam ream" line without everyone cracking up, himself included.  I have a hard time visualizing Shirley going to a fertilizer plant on a double date, but it would've been fun to hear the girls talk about it.
  • The "ten feet tall" line is presumably a callback to the filmed line about Squiggy seeming small to Lenny.
  • It's probably just as well that they dropped Squiggy "treating women like dirt."  Not that that's what he does to Vivian.  He just stands up for himself.
  • We lost some Shirley material in this script, especially with Carmine, but overall Cindy W. got some nice moments in this "Squiggy" story.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
