"The Robbery," Scenes H and J

We and Laverne head over to "Jake's apartment - a short time later."  The first three pages made it in intact, but instead of Laverne talking about how she didn't listen to people when they tried to warn her, she in the script says, "I'm trying to protect you.  I came up here to warn you, and you're sending me up the river into Sing-Sing."

In the script, Shirley tells Jake, "Laverne said you were strong," while onscreen she claims to be afraid of heights.  Also, in the script, Laverne was supposed to try to walk up the wall and then walk up Shirley, which was improved to them trying to jump off the wall.

In the script, Carmine was supposed to now be wearing an overcoat over Laverne's robe.  The girls would cheer his arrival and he'd say, "Oh, now I see.  You threw me out so you could come do this," to which Laverne would explain, "Jake put us up here."

In the script, Jake calls Carmine "dance boy," rather than Mr. Fuzzy Slippers.

The filmed scene ends with Shirley saying that Carmine getting them down from the wall probably should've been her first order.  Here's what was dropped:

LAVERNE
Probably.  Shirl, you know I've been thinking.  Maybe Jake isn't such a nice guy.

SHIRLEY
Not Mr. Right, huh?

LAVERNE
Nah, I think I'm gonna keep looking.

SHIRLEY
Good move.

LAVERNE
The most interesting part of the whole thing is why has Carmine been going around in my robe and slippers all evening.

SHIRLEY
Ah, funny story.  See he was fixin this pipe... why don't I tell you this story when you have more time.

LAVERNE
I'm not going anywhere.

SHIRLEY
Oh - well - he likes your robe.  He wants one like it.  He's funny that way....

LAVERNE STARTS TO LAUGH.

The tag ends up back at the "girls' apartment - day":

SHIRLEY IS ON THE COUCH NEXT TO BOO-BOO KITTY.  SHE'S WATCHING TV AND MAKING HERSELF A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH.  THE MUSIC INDICATES THE MOVIE IS OVER.  SHRILEY GETS UP AND TURNS IT OFF.

SHIRLEY
Boy, that Natalie Wood is beautiful.  (TO BOO-BOO KITTY) You think we look a like [sic]?  Thank you Boo-Boo Kitty.

This precious/disturbing moment was dropped and we just see Shirley and BBK on the couch watching TV when Laverne comes home.  The thing about other prisoners turning Jake upside-down was added.  The filmed scene ends with Squiggy leading the group of tourists into the bedroom, and this was left out:

SHIRLEY GRABS LAVERNE AND STARTS TO DRAG HER TOWARD THE BEDROOM.

SHIRLEY
Come on.  How can you calmly sit by while they look at our underwear?

LAVERNE
(PROUDLY) Mine are clean.

SHIRLEY DRAGS LAVERNE INTO BEDROOM.

Thoughts:
  • Onscreen, Laverne doesn't seem the slightest bit curious about why Carmine is wearing her robe, but it's definitely a thing in the script.  And Shirley would rather have Laverne think Carmine is a cross-dresser than for her to know that Shirley and Carmine almost did the deed.
  • BBK is the flattering friend that Shirley secretly wants Laverne to be.  Maybe.
  • For an episode-closer where there's talk of underwear and Shirley drags Laverne to the bedroom, it's pretty unshippy.  Probably.
  • Overall, the script needed polishing but was almost there by this version.  It's not an episode I'm crazy about but it has its moments.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
