Before Shirley "uses Laverne as a ladder," she was supposed to say, "I'll try to be gentle with your rungs."
This was left out after Shirley says something's in her way in the chimney:
LAVERNE PULLS SHIRLEY BACK OUT. SHE EMERGES COVERED WITH SOOT AND HOLDING A METAL BOX ON WHICH THERE IS A NOTE AND A CIVIL AIR DEFENSE EMBLEM.
LAVERNE
What is that?
SHIRLEY
(READING) "Property of Lenny and Squiggy. Warning. To be opened only in case of nuclear holocaust." I can't believe it. Lenny and Squiggy used the chimney for a bomb shelter?
LAVERNE
(TAKES THE BOX) Gimme that. What would they need in a nuclear disaster?
LAVERNE OPENS THE BOX. SHE AND SHIRLEY PEER INSIDE.
LAVERNE/SHIRLEY
Bosco.
Bosco.
SHIRLEY
Well, they do plan ahead.
LAVERNE
Yeah. After you're blown to bits, who wouldn't want chocolate milk.
And they omitted Squiggy's closing line, after he peeks through the hole Laverne just made in his roof, "Atomic attack. Where's my Bosco?"
A few thoughts:
- Did the censors think "rungs" was suggestive, or did it just get lost in the shuffle?
- I could see the boys wanting Bosco in the event of a nuclear attack.
- This episode makes it clear that the boys are on the top floor, so them using the chimney feels more plausible, except, do these apartments even have fireplaces? Why do we never see these fireplaces? Are they on the missing fourth wall? If so, why did Carmine need a fake fire when he and Shirley were trying to bring back the romance? Maybe the basement doesn't have a fireplace, but the upper stories do.
The Bosco bit is great.
