"The Quiz Show," Scenes D, E, and H

Act Two opens on the " 'Be Silly for Dollars' set - next day":

OUR CONGENIAL HOST CHICKIE IS JUST FINISHING WITH A CONTESTANT.  WE SEE A MAN WITH HIS HEAD IN A LARGE BUCKET OF SPAGHETTI.  THE BUZZER GOES OFF ENDING HIS TIME.  THE MAN LIFTS HIS HEAD OUT OF THE BUCKET AND HE IS COVERED WITH TOMATO SAUCE AND SPAGHETTI.

CHICKIE
Sorry, Mr. Banick, you lose, but thanks for playing bobbing for meatballs... It's too bad you didn't take one more bite, because you would have found a wet, filthy, one hundred dollar bill.... but what the heck, you got a free meal.

IRMA LEADS MR. BANICK OFF THE STAGE, SOBBING.

CHICKIE (CONT'D)
Everybody is a winner on 'Be Silly for Dollars'....

Then he welcomes back Laverne and Shirley, which is where the episode picks up.  Interestingly, in the script, Laverne doesn't want to see what they're missing from the World of Luxury, but Shirley says, "Show me, show me," while onscreen neither girl wants to know.

We lost Irma's song, "The World of Luxury's a wonderful place.  You can lie in bed all day and stuff your face."  They omitted Chickie saying that each tiara has "twenty-five bagets."

The next scene has the same set, "a few minutes later."  The first cake was supposed to land on Laverne's head, rather than the floor.  We lost Laverne catching a cake against her chest and complaining, "Cold, cold icing, it's cold all the way to my belly button."

The Tag is also on that set, "a little later."  In the script, Shirley lost an earring rather than the car keys.  They omitted  Raul calling them "the goofy girls" and Shirley saying, "Nice, for all the posterity we shall be known as ' the goofy girls.' "  She also wonders if they should get an unlisted phone number because of their fame.  Otherwise, the last scene is intact.

A few thoughts:
  • I wish we'd gotten to see Mr. Banick and the spaghetti, although I fully understand why we didn't.
  • The car keys seem more worth coming back for than an earring, unless it was a special earring.
  • Overall, the finished episode is more polished, but we lost some nice little things along the way.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
