Onscreen, the moths are named Barbara, Debbie, Jo Ann, and Christine, but in the script it's Wendy, Chuck, and Dave. The boys' reaction to the salami is described as "thrilled out of their heads."
They left out Lenny saying of the living room ensemble, "You don't got a bathroom or nothin'?" Other omitted Lenny lines are "We live on the third floor. If you gave us a crane or somethin' we'd take you up on it" and "Yeah, it's not for men of our gender."
Instead of Lenny blessing Chickie for the wonderful work he's doing and correcting his pronunciation of "Kosnowski," Lenny observed, "I hope this has been cured. We don't want a sick salami."
In the script, Shirley has "her eyes shut tight," while onscreen they're wide open with stage fright. They left out Laverne telling Shirley to "loosen up," as well as a bit later this:
CHICKIE
(GETS NEXT TO SHIRLEY) You seem to be awfully quiet. You're not scared, are you?
SHIRLEY'S MOUTH HANGS OPEN.
LAVERNE
(CLOSING SHIRLEY'S MOUTH; PULLING HIM BACK) No. She ain't scared. Are you? Say something. (SHE SHAKES SHIRLEY'S HEAD NO) She's fine. Can we win somethin' now?
CHICKIE
i hope so. You know how to play the game.
LAVERNE NODS SHIRLEY'S HEAD YES.
Instead of Shirley blurting out Liberace's name, this is how it went:
SHIRLEY COMES OUT OF HER DAZE AND STARTS TO THINK.
SHIRLEY
... (STARTS TO SING VERY QUICKLY) 'You must remember this; a kiss is still a kiss; A sigh is still a sigh; The fundamental things apply' -- Victor Borge!!
LAVERNE
Good, Shirl!
A few thoughts:
- I like the boys' material in both versions.
- Shirley's stage fright is a bigger deal in the script.
- And the Victor Borge guess might be funnier, but I like that there are at least two canonical mentions of Liberace.
The boys' material is ineed fun!
