"2001 - A Comedy Odyssey," Scenes H and J

We return to the "girls' bedroom - the present."  They added Frank's line about Edna sometimes not being sure he's alive.  The second half of the scene was split off to form the aired tag.  They added Laverne listing off S & S's dream kids, and Shirley's reaction.

Here's the unaired tag:

INT. GIRLS' APARTMENT - THE NEXT NIGHT

OUR ENTIRE CAST IS THERE, EXCEPT FRANK.  THEY ARE GOING THROUGH THE PAPER, TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT MOVIE TO SEE.  FRANK ENTERS, WEARING A RAINCOAT.  THE APARTMENT WINDOW IS CURTAINED.

FRANK
If I'm driving, it's settled.  We see "South Pacific", Saturday matinee at the Bijou.

ALL
We seen it already.

LAVERNE
We're tired of it.

FRANK
How can you get tired of Rossano Brazzi?

SHIRLEY
I hate the Bijou.  The floors are sticky from Pepsi.  I want to see "A Hundred and One Dalmatians."

SQUIGGY
You wanna watch dogs, go to the pound.  Me and Len wanna see "The Return of the Fly."

LENNY
(FROM MEMORY) Vincent Price repeats his role in this macabre tale about a man who turns into a fly.

SQUIGGY
He begins as a lovely maggot.

CARMINE
Let's go see "Pillow Talk."  Maybe this time, Doris Day will do something.

EDNA
Why don't we all see something that makes us think a little?  There is a wonderful new movie.  You'll like it, Frank.  It's Italian.  It's called "8 1/2."

CARMINE
We'll see it when it's got a real title.

LAVERNE
I wanna see "Hercules Unchained."  Steve Reeves has got this great bod, see.  And he greases himself all up, and he's all shiny.

SQUIGGY
Like a slug.

FRANK
We see "South Pacific," and I pay.

THEY ALL NOD AND START TO EXIT AD LIBBING "YEAH," "GREAT IDEA," ETC.

SHIRLEY
"South Pacific" will be fun.  It's a beautiful love story.

LAVERNE
Yeah, and they got all those sailors that get greasy.

THEY ALL EXIT.

Thoughts:
  • Why does it matter if the window is curtained or if Frank is wearing a raincoat?
  • If it's night, why are they going to a matinee?  Are they planning for tomorrow?  This episode continues to have a confusing timeline.
  • Here are the release dates of the movies: South Pacific 1958, 101 Dalmatians 1961, Return of the Fly 1959, Pillow Talk 1959, 8 1/2 1963 (so very "new" in 1960 or '61), and Hercules Unchained 1959.
  • The boys' comments about Return of the Fly are priceless.  The movie choices are mostly in character, except I can't see Carmine wanting to go see a Doris Day movie, even in hopes that she'll finally give up her virginity.
  • I assume the "slug" comment is a compliment coming from Squiggy.
  • This tag could've been on almost any episode and I can see why it was cut, but I like it.  And at least there's no fat-shaming.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
