They added Laverne saying that Dr. Harold will probably break their date for the circus, since that was set up earlier. In the script, after Shirley does a razzberry at Karen over the phone, this is the stage direction:
SHIRLEY HANGS UP AND GIVES A SMILING LAVERNE HER MEDICINE. THEY START TO GIGGLE.
I prefer Laverne giving Shirley a hug, as she does onscreen.
Although the filmed version isn't one of my favorite episodes, it is arguably stronger than the script, getting little touches that enhance the various friendships. Still, this is at this point my earliest glimpse at the show and it's good to see what the beginnings were like. Also, I have to note that Shirley's attitude towards revenge would certainly change over the next seven seasons.
Aww yeah - in general the filmed ep is definitely stronger.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is that getting McKean & Lander on board as writers-actors is going to make a difference in quality for Season One scripts vs. filmed episodes. Even when they didn't write the basic scripts, they probably got to punch up their own material.
DeleteI'm guessing so!
