"Lenny's Crush," Scene A

We start out in the "girls' apartment - night."  The first page of dialogue made it in but they added Shirley's line that she may be beautiful but she's not cranky.

Interestingly, Squiggy's date is described as "one of the girls from the neighborhood," suggesting she is not actually Francine from Chicago.  (And indeed, despite what I thought a year or two ago, she's played by a different actress.)  And Squiggy's line "Drink it.  It'll make it easier" is addressed to "girls," plural.  In the script, Squiggy wants to show the girl his "itchings," which was improved to the line about his moth collection in her beehive.

Laverne's original reply to Lenny saying girls don't like sports was "That's not true.  I've played football with a lot of girls.  I must admit that it's not as much fun as being tackled by a bunch of guys," rather than her saying lots of girls play sports, although they're not as good as her.

Lenny's condiment tower was added.

In the script, Laverne holds Lenny's hand from "Len, do you have any idea what I'm trying to tell ya?" until she "takes hand back" for "Aww, that's terrific."

Onscreen, Laverne tries to kiss Lenny's cheek and he turns it into a mouth-kiss, and she mostly seems amused, although she tells him he doesn't kiss bad.  Then she goes into the bedroom and he gazes after her.  But here's how the scene ends in the script, after she tells him not to forget he's a sweet guy:

LAVERNE
... (KISSES LENNY AND HEADS FOR BEDROOM)  Don't kiss bad, either.

LAVERNE EXITS.  LENNY TAKES HIS GUITAR AND HUGS IT LIKE A WOMAN.

LENNY
Oh, Laverne.

HE KISSES THE GUITAR AND GETS HIS NOSE CAUGHT IN THE STRINGS.

LENNY (CONT'D)
Laverne, let go of my nose.

A few thoughts:
  • The line tweaks are generally improvements.
  • It feels slightly more like Laverne is leading Lenny on in the script than onscreen, from the longer hand-holding to the more ambiguous kiss before she exits.
  • I could see Lenny hugging and kissing his guitar, but I can see why they cut his nose getting caught.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
