"How Do You Say 'Are You Dead?' in German," Scene C

We're still at the girls' apartment, a "short time later - day":

LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY ARE SITTING ON THE COUCH WITH ERIC.  THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR.

SHIRLEY

Who is it?

HILDIE (O.S.)

It's me, Hildie.

SHIRLEY ANSWERS THE DOOR.  HILDIE, AN ATTRACTIVE BLACK GIRL, STANDS THERE.  SHE HAS A JACKET OVER HER WAITRESS COSTUME.

SHIRLEY

Hi, Hildie.

HILDIE

Hi.  I only have a minute.  The Pizza Bowl's jammed.  I gotta get back to work.

LAVERNE

Here he is.  Find out what's wrong with him.

HILDIE

(TO ERIC, IN GERMAN) My name is Hildie.  What's wrong with you?

Then they have "an exchange in German," as background to dialogue between Laverne and Shirley that made it onscreen.  Shirley's response to Laverne not wanting to take Eric to see the Globe Trotters was omitted: "Why not?  Everyone likes the Globe Trotters.  They've played in Europe."

Eric getting sold a farm in the middle of Lake Michigan was added.  Hildie also got additional dialogue that gives her more personality than she gets in the script, like saying Frank will break her kneecaps and "Auf wiedersehen, sugar pie," rather than plain "Auf wiedersehen."

This was left out:

SHIRLEY

The poor guy.  I wish we could help him.  Sleeping in the back of a cleaners.

LAVERNE

Well he's Jiffy Cleaners' responsibility, not ours.  We'll give him something to eat and send him back to the store.

SHIRLEY

I forgot about his job.  I'd better call Jiffy.  They probably think Eric got lost.

LAVERNE

Tell them we found him under our couch.

So in the script, Shirley calls Jiffy, rather than Mr. Colletti somehow knowing to call the girls.  (Maybe he's calling all his clients.)  The scene, and act, end with Shirley saying, "Now Eric really is our responsibility.  I just got him fired."  Onscreen, Shirley tells Laverne in Pig Latin, but Laverne demonstrates that Eric doesn't understand it in English.

Thoughts:

• The differences between script and film aren't as dramatically different as for Scenes A and B (no mention of orgies for one thing), but it is generally an improvement in the finished product.
• It's interesting that Hildie's attractiveness is mentioned here, as if they were indeed teasing us with an Eric/Hildie ship, although this is all we get of Hildie in either version.
• The girls clearly have met Hildie before, which makes sense.
• Shirley being a buttinsky is definitely a bigger thing in the scripts this season than onscreen, here with her actually getting Eric fired, rather than just answering the phone and trying to explain.
