"The Duke of Squigmann" script, Scene H

It's back to the girls' apartment, at night, with more of the snow-tire running gag.

We lost this bit, after Lenny asks FEC to be nice to Squiggy "forever":

FRANK/CARMINE
Wrong.

FRANK
This Duke of Squigmann sounds like a nice guy.  I say we never wake Squiggy up.

Lenny was supposed to "look pitiful" to convince Frank, and then when Frank says he'll give it a shot, there was this:

LENNY
(OVERCOME) Thank you, one and all.  You guys are so... so darn...

LENNY PULLS OUT HIS HANDKERCHIEF AND NOISILY BLOWS HIS NOSE.

Unless there's a serious DVD edit, they never aired Carmine and Frank trying to befriend Squiggy before it's Edna's turn:

THEY ABOUT FACE AND WALK AWAY.  THEY LOOK AT EACH OTHER.  A BEAT, THEN FRANK AND EDNA PUSH CARMINE TOWARD SQUIGGY.  HE FIGHTS ALL THE WAY.  THEN HE SIGHS AND SITS NEXT TO SQUIGGY.

CARMINE
Squig, how you doin'?  Hey, pal...

SQUIGGY
What is it?  I can't read, move my lips and talk all at the same time.

CARMINE
This won't take too long.  I got two tickets to the Braves game.  You wanna go?

SQUIGGY
With you?  Get serious.  You are known as a guy who dances around in lepotards in broad daylight.  Know what I mean?  Enough said.

CARMINE GESTURES TO FRANK "YOUR TURN".  FRANK IS RELUCTANT.  EDNA AND CARMINE PUSH HIM TOWARD SQUIGGY.  FRANK SITS NEXT TO HIM, AND PUTS ON A BIG SMILE.

FRANK
Hey, Squiggy.  Wowie.  Hey, how'd you like me to teach you how to make pizza?

SQUIGGY
Sure, but who's gonna teach you.  (LAUGHS)  I'm hot tonight.

FRANK GETS UP, GESTURES TO EDNA, THEN REJOINS CARMINE.  SQUIGGY GOES BACK TO HIS COMIC.

I'd forgotten that Squiggy does call Mrs. Babish Edna in this scene (both versions), but that makes sense since he thinks she's "hot for" him (script)/ "has the hots for" him (episode).

She does tell Frank and Carmine, "Now!" and then is one of the most beautiful stage directions in the history of the series:  "THEY ALL BEGIN CHOKING THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF SQUIGGY."

Lenny's line after he returns was omitted, "Boy, we're gonna be fightin' Huns tonight," as well as him going to help Squiggy, although I guess these are both implied.

A few observations:
  • It seems like Lenny's over-the-top reactions were toned down from the script to the episode, and McKean's performance in this episode is surprisingly naturalistic, while still allowing for humor.
  • With the girls mostly gone, we're getting more of Frank, Edna, and Carmine teaming up, and I like the dynamic.
  • Although there are scripts where Frank and Squiggy bond, like "Debutante Ball," this one definitely falls into the "Frank can barely stand Squiggy" category.
  • The part with Carmine and Frank trying to befriend Squiggy reminds me of two scenes that were broadcast, the one from "The Beatnik Show" where Squiggy can't hear Laverne and Lenny talking because he's reading a comic book, and the one (I think in "Driving Test") where both Frank and Carmine offer Squiggy jobs and he rejects and insults them.
  • Squiggy uses the word "hot" in two very different senses.
  • I wish they'd found a way to include the snow tires.

  1. The snow tire gag IS funny, and Squig's usual toughness shines through.

And I laughed at "Boy we're going to be fighting the Huns tonight."

    1. The snow tire gag has an unexpected payoff in the next scene.

It feels like when this script got shot, they cut some closing lines that would've rounded off scenes nicely.

    2. For some reason I can just imagine him addressing himself that way pft.

    3. Yeah, some of the omitted lines in this script are very in character, and some are very out of.
