"The Road to Burbank," Scene A

They skipped (at least on the DVD cut) everyone singing "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows," as well as Edna's line, "Drink up.  We've got lots of champagne."

After Rhonda first suggests toasting to her career, there was this:

FRANK
And now, a special surprise.  Rosita!

ROSITA ENTERS WITH A PIZZA.

ROSITA
It's a pizza pie!  (YELLS) Yaaah!

RHONDA
What are you so excited about?

ROSITA
Who's excited?  It's hot.

SHIRLEY
It's just like old times at the Pizza Bowl.  All that's missing is the sound of bowlers at play.

SONNY
(SNIFFS)  Do I smell burning fruit?

FRANK
Yeah, that's Pizza California.  It's got avocados, raisins, lettuce.

EDNA
You're lucky.  You should taste his spaghetti and fruit balls.

ROSITA
Coming right up.

ROSITA EXITS TO KITCHEN.

After Carmine tells Frank and Edna that his singing telegram is free, Frank was supposed to say, "Thanks, I'm sure we'll get a lot of use out of it."

The gift of the cowboy hats was supposed to have Frank and Edna putting on the wrong ones, "so that Frank's is too small and Edna's is too big."  Then Edna would say, from inside the hat, "It's beautiful.  What a pretty sweatband."  Then they'd trade hats.

After all the bottle-breaking, there was this bit:

SONNY SURVEYS THE MESS.

SHIRLEY
Boy, that cracked me up!

SONNY
I guess my gift was a smashing success.

Lenny's "Why, thank you," after Rosita remarks on "you DeFazios" throwing a wild party, seems to be a McKean adlib.

Chuck Malone is described as "a man in a cheap suit," although it doesn't look that bad.

They dropped Lenny asking of hypothetical pictures of the stay in the motel, "Do you have wallet size?"

This was omitted:

TAKING A LOOK AROUND AT THE MESS FROM THE BOTTLE FIGHT.

CHUCK
Looks like I got the right people.  This letter is for all of you.  (READS LETTER QUICKLY) The Royal Cactus Motel, herein referred to as the party of the first part, requests forthright restitution for damages sustained unto above-mentioned premise from the Squigmanns and the Kosnowskis, herein referred to as the party of the second part, as stated in the attached bill of particulars.  Should the party of the second part fail to make restitution to the party of the first part, the party of the first part shall seek punitive damages from the party of the second part.

SHIRLEY/LENNY/SQUIGGY
Huh?

Thoughts:
  • The stuff about the Pizza Bowl is sort of bittersweet.
  • The Pizza California joke is meh, like much of the omitted dialogue.
  • The spaghetti and fruit balls do appear later in the filmed scene, without any leadup.  Having Frank's wife refer to them as "his" balls, which the others should taste, is a little unsettling.
  • I do like Frank throwing shade at one of Carmine's pathetic singing telegrams.
  • Shirley and Sonny trade feeble puns, but at least it's a gesture towards giving him a personality.
  • I think they're trying for some parody of legal jargon with Chuck's skipped letter, but it's actually pretty straightforward, especially compared to a similar scene in the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera.
  • This comes up in both versions of the script, but why doesn't Shirley immediately blame the boys, if her version of events in the motel is supposed to be the truth?  For that matter, if the boys are guilty of attempted rape, why did the girls continue to travel with them, and continue to be friends with them?  I still maintain that neither her version nor Squiggy's is the truth.  I'll probably get back to this as I go through later scenes.

  1. It really is. And then Frank ends up cooking pizza anyway.

My continued guess is Laverne holds the truth and knows they're both full of baloney, which is why immediate forgiveness is given.

  2. It really is what? Yeah, he cooks pizza in Season Eight.

Your Laverne theory is one I usually subscribe to, although sometimes I think S & S concocted both stories together, knowing who would be believed by that biased jury.

Once again, I'm reluctantly writing another non-obituary for a star of Laverne & Shirley .  Three times in just over three years is ...
